EMMA AND MOSS DROVE away from the Guzman home in silence, each mulling over their own thoughts. It had turned colder while they were talking to Elena and Miranda.
âIâd like to show the drawing of the cabin to Kalebâs grandfather,â Emma finally said. âMaybe he knows it.â
âIâve been thinking about that,â Moss said. They were stopped at a traffic light. âThe cabin shows snow. Itâs rare it snows in Ramona. If the kid is psychic or has some magic powers that told him he might go there, it would have to be somewhere else.â
âLike up by Julian?â Emma suggested.
âPerhaps,â Moss agreed. âItâs a much higher elevation and does get snow. Did it snow the night of the tree lighting?â
Emma thought back to that night. âNo, but it was cold. We did get a bit of snow last night, as you saw when you came to our home today. And more is expected over the next few days. They are predicting a white Christmas for Julian. One of the times Kaleb spoke to me, he said he was cold.â
Something nudged Emmaâs foot. It was the thermos of coffee Phil had given her. She picked it up and showed it to Moss. âWould you like some coffee? Itâs black and I have no sugar or cream.â
âSure. It might help us think.â Moss pulled into the parking lot of a strip mall and parked, but left the engine running for the heater. She picked up a styrofoam cup from the cup holder and took off the lid. After checking the contents, she lowered her window and tossed the dregs onto the pavement before holding the cup out to Emma. Emma filled the cup and the cap to the thermos for herself. The two women took their first few sips in silence.
âKalebâs teacher said he wasnât in school yesterday or today. That means he could have gone missing two days ago. If someone took him, he could be long gone by now.â Moss paused long enough to take another sip of her coffee. âOr dead.â
Emma shivered in spite of the warmth of the vehicle and the coffee. âTrue, but I really donât think heâs dead. I think someone grabbed him for some reason and is holding him.â
âThe two women he mentioned to you?â Moss asked.
Emma nodded. âYes. Two bad women.â
âLetâs hope so. Iâd rather that than him being another dead kid.â
Help me, Emma.
Emma froze, the coffee almost to her lips. She glanced at Moss, who was concentrating on the warmth of her cup. Emma tapped her gently, wondering how to convey that Kaleb was communicating without looking like a nut or charlatan. When Moss looked over, Emma said in a whisper, âItâs Kaleb.â
The last time they had communicated, Emma had retreated inward. She had to do that again if she wanted to keep the connection open.
âWhat? Where?â Moss asked. Emma put a finger to her lips and hoped the skeptical detective quieted so she could concentrate.
Closing her eyes, Emma slipped deep inside her mind, where the voice was stronger.
